Machinery Speeds - Rates of Work It is important to measure the capacity of farm equipment to undertake seasonal operations. By knowing how many hectares a specific set of equipment can cover in a season it is easier to identify equipment capacity constraints. An essential measurement in caculating capacity is the speed at which the equipment operates. Each combination of a traction unit and implement will work at a different optimum speed depending upon the soil conditions, swath of the implement and power of the traction unit. Other systems have a speed limited by the intricacy of the operation. This section provides a series of tables indicating the 'average' optimum speeds for different combinations of traction and implements. These tables are meant to provide guidance only since farms, depending upon equipment and the skill of operators might have different speeds. These guides are presented in tables of the following form for heavy, medium and light soils. The vertical axis of the graph is equipment, or implement, swath measured in metres and the horizontal axis of the graph is the Horse Power (HP) of the traction unit or combine. Figures within the table are km./hr.
